What is Diabetes
Diabetes is a medical condition involving a disturbance to the usual functioning of the body, specifically carbohydrate metabolism, characterized by high blood sugar and the presence of sugar in the urine, which results in inadequate production or utilization of insulin in the pancreas.
Diabetes effects the whole body, not just the pancreas. The body has trillions of cells in it; every cell has diabetes. Insulin, a protein, is the key that unlocks the cell door and allows nutrition to go into the cell to keep it healthy. Without insulin, cells eventually die.
